Chapters & Organization

Writefully So helps you keep your manuscript organized with chapters and folders.

Creating Chapters

Click the + button in the Chapters section of the sidebar, or use the context menu. Each chapter has:

• Title — The chapter name shown in the sidebar
• Synopsis — A short summary for your reference
• Labels — Color-coded labels for categorization
• Content — The chapter’s text, edited in the rich-text editor

Binder Views and Sorting

Use the compact icons beside Binder to switch between your folder tree and an automatic category view. Categories collect manuscript chapters, characters, timelines, 2D maps, locations, lore, items, and magic systems without moving anything in your project.

The sort menu lets you keep Binder order or view items alphabetically A–Z or Z–A. Alphabetical sorting is only a view: it does not change your saved manuscript or export order. Your view and sort choice are remembered separately for each project.

Organizing with Folders

You can create folders to group chapters together — useful for parts, acts, or sections of your novel.

• Drag and drop chapters between folders
• Nest folders within folders
• Reorder chapters by dragging them in the sidebar

Excluding a Folder from the Word Count

Right-click a folder and choose Exclude folder from word count to keep every chapter in that folder out of your manuscript total. This is useful for notes, research, alternate scenes, cut material, or any section you want to retain without affecting your draft goal.

The chapters stay editable and remain in the binder. Their words are omitted from project totals, goals, manuscript views, analysis, and achievement progress until you right-click the folder and choose Include folder in word count. You can still exclude an individual chapter when the rest of its folder should count normally.

Chapter Order

The order of chapters in the folder view with Binder order selected is the order of your manuscript. Drag chapters to rearrange them. This order is preserved when you export.

Synopses

Each chapter can have a synopsis — a brief description of what happens. This is useful for:

• Planning before you write
• Keeping track of plot threads
• Reviewing your story structure at a glance

Soft Delete

When you delete a chapter, it’s not permanently removed. Deleted items are marked and can be recovered if needed.
