Character Presence

Character Presence shows you at a glance which characters appear in which chapters.

The Character Presence grid showing character appearances per chapter

A grid where:

  • Rows represent your characters
  • Columns represent your chapters
  • Color intensity shows how frequently a character appears in each chapter

Character Presence tracks character appearances by detecting character names in your manuscript. When a character’s name appears in a chapter, that chapter’s cell lights up for that character.

  • Pacing: See if a character disappears for too many chapters
  • Balance: Check that your protagonist has consistent presence
  • Plot threads: Ensure subplot characters appear at the right points
  • Editing: Identify chapters where a character should appear but doesn’t
  • Use character names consistently in your writing to get the most accurate presence map
  • Review Character Presence during your editing pass to catch pacing issues
  • Compare it against your plot outline to verify characters show up where they should
