Yes! Writefully So is completely free to download and use. There are no subscriptions, no premium tiers, and no feature gating.
What platforms does it run on?
Writefully So is available for macOS and Windows. It's built with Electron, so it runs natively on both platforms.
Where is my data stored?
All your data is stored locally on your computer — by default in your Documents folder, but you can choose any location during setup. Your manuscripts, characters, and world-building data never leave your machine.
Does it require an internet connection?
No. Writefully So is fully offline. There are no accounts, no cloud sync, and no features that require an internet connection. Once you've installed it, you can write on an airplane, in a cabin, or anywhere inspiration strikes.
Do you collect any data or analytics?
Absolutely not. There is zero telemetry, zero analytics, and zero data collection. We never see your work, your usage patterns, or anything else. Your writing is private.
What file formats can I export to?
You can export your full manuscript or individual sections as DOCX (perfect for agent/publisher submissions) or ePub (for e-readers and Kindle). ePub exports include 3 professional book style themes — Classic (drop caps, ornamental scene breaks), Modern (clean sans-serif), and Literary (elegant italic headings). Your author/pen name is automatically embedded in the metadata. You can also export character profiles and individual chapters as PDF.
Can I import my existing work?
Yes! You can import Word (.docx), Markdown, and plain text files directly into your project. Documents with headings are automatically split into separate chapters — it tries H1 headings first, then falls back to H2 for compatibility with Scrivener exports. You can also paste content directly into the editor.
How is this different from Scrivener?
Both are novel-writing tools, but Writefully So is free, local-first with zero cloud dependencies, and has a modern, beautiful interface. It includes features like character personality sliders, D&D-style alignment grids, relationship graphs, world-building codexes with typed cross-references, a canvas map editor with icon libraries, interactive timelines, writing statistics with heatmaps, and genre project templates that go beyond what most writing apps offer.
How is this different from Google Docs or Word?
Google Docs and Word are general-purpose word processors. Writefully So is purpose-built for novelists with character profiles, world-building tools, chapter organization, writing statistics, and a distraction-free paginated editor designed for long-form fiction.
Why does my computer show a security warning when I open the app?
Writefully So is currently in beta and not yet code-signed. This means macOS and Windows will show a security warning on first launch — it does not mean the app is unsafe. On macOS, right-click the app → Open → Open. On Windows, click "More info" → "Run anyway." You only need to do this once. See the installation guide for detailed steps. We're working on getting the app signed so these warnings go away.
Can I back up my projects?
Since your data is stored in a regular folder on your computer, you can back it up however you normally back up files — Time Machine, external drives, or any backup solution you prefer. You can also use the Snapshots feature to save versioned copies of your chapters within the app.
Is there a mobile version?
Not yet — Writefully So is currently a desktop app. A mobile companion is something we're exploring for the future.
